The 2023 mid-year meeting of the Society for Post-Supersessionist Theology featured Michael Azar presenting on: “Jewish-Christian Relations and the Sources of Orthodox Christian Theology: Problems and Paradigms.”
One of the reasons for Orthodox Christianity’s relatively rare appearance in Jewish-Christian dialogue has been the tension between, on the one hand, Orthodoxy’s distinct devotion to the church fathers and its ancient liturgy and, on the other, the generally negative stigma with which these sources have been received by dialogue participants elsewhere due in part to concerns about supersessionism.
Prof. Michael Azar’s paper considered the problems and paradigms involved in this tension in hopes of promoting a more fruitful place for Orthodox Christianity in the dialogue, without unduly subjecting it to the norms and expectations of what has been a primarily Western discourse.
On July 13, 2024, St Vladimir’s Seminary’s Seminary hosted its fourth annual Education Day Online. During the six-hour “Zoomathon,” members of the public joined in as seminary professors and guest scholars discussed topics including Scripture, theology, ethics, inter-Orthodoxy, and more.
In this fifth session, Seminary Associate Professor of Patristics Very Rev Dr Bogdan Bucur was joined by Dr Michal Bar-Asher Siegal, Associate Professor in the Goldstein-Goren department for Jewish Thought and Vice President for Global Engagement at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel. Together, they led a fascinating discussion on the intersection of the Church Fathers and early Christianity with Jewish thought in sources such as the Talmud.
